Never stopped AT the Salten Sea before. But drove by there a few times a ~10 years ago for mobile dental clinics. There certainly is a distinct "odor" around there... somewhat foul. And on a warm sunny day, you'd get a warm breeze of manure stench that blows thanks to the surrounding cows.
But I look forward to your photos of them abandoned buildings. Don't think I'll venture that way anytime soon myself.

Keep in mind that the Salton Sea is only about 30 miles from Borrego Springs and for the next few weeks a day trip could also include some nice desert wildflower viewing. |

Sorry Rick, we did not go to the Salton Sea, so I did not get to check on buildings. We did go to Anza Borrego for flowers. Around the visitors center, there were some nice ones, and lots of people. The ranger said we were a week early for the real peak, as the weather has been pretty cold there so far, but should be warmer all this coming week. He told us the best flowers were out Di Giorgia road about 1.5 miles past the end of the pavement, and if we did not want to go that far, the campground has some of the nicest flowers, so we walked to there from the visitors center (0.6 mi). They were abundant. From there we drove out Di Gorgio road to the end of the pavement and in our car we were able to go about 2 miles or so beyond. The first 0.5 miles had nice primrose and verbena, but most were covered with the invasive mustard that is forming a dense mat for acres. At about the mile mark, most of the mustard was gone and there were plenty of flowers to take photos of, but they did not form any large dense mats. Just scattered patches at this time. Lots coming up, however.
We also drove out Henderson Canyon Rd and found some flowers towards the east end, and lots of mustard. It was 4:00 by then, so we did not go to any other places. I wanted to go to the elephant tree trail, but no time, and since I am not doing the driving, we turned back home. so, if you are planning a trip, next week should be idea. We were a week early, I guess. And two years ago we were a week late at Death Valley. One of these years I will see the desert in full boom. I'll post some photos later in the posting section when I get them done. Aram |
