Tom, I know there are quite a few of other low self-discharge NiMH batteries than Eneloops, but I personally prefer Sanyo batteries.
I bought 8 Maha/PowerEX and a fancy charger that shows charge cycle, breaks in new batteries and few other features. After about a year, those batteries are not reliable. Since then, I just bought Eneloops and been happy with them.

Here is another test on POTN about rechargeable AA batteries.
